Most volatile
- Basseterre: 0.41
Least volatile
- Basseterre: 0.41
How is it calculated?
Our volatility “beta” number is generated by an algorithm that analyzes hourly barometric pressure changes. It looks at how much the pressure fluctuates from hour to hour. A beta of 0 means no change, perfectly stable pressure. The higher the decimal value, the more variation there has been throughout the day or over a longer period.
Weather Systems
Tropical weather systems like trade winds, tropical waves, and hurricanes strongly influence air pressure in Saint Kitts and Nevis. High-pressure areas often bring calm and sunny days, while low-pressure systems can bring storms or heavy rain, especially during hurricane season.
Geography
The islands have mountains in the center that can affect how air pressure changes from place to place. Higher areas tend to have slightly lower air pressure compared to the coastline. Wind moving over the mountains can cause sudden local changes in pressure.
Seasonal Cycles
During winter, the North Atlantic high-pressure system is stronger, bringing steady trade winds and more stable weather. In summer and early fall, low-pressure systems and hurricanes become more common, leading to sudden drops in pressure and stormier weather.
Climate Change
Climate change may make extreme weather and pressure changes more likely on the islands. Warmer oceans can create stronger storms and more intense low-pressure systems. This might mean heavier rainfall and more unpredictable weather in the future.
