How is it calculated?
Our volatility “beta” number is generated by an algorithm that analyzes hourly barometric pressure changes. It looks at how much the pressure fluctuates from hour to hour. A beta of 0 means no change, perfectly stable pressure. The higher the decimal value, the more variation there has been throughout the day or over a longer period.
Weather Systems
Atlantic storms often bring low air pressure to northern and western Spain, causing clouds and rain. High pressure from the Azores High usually brings sunny and dry weather, especially to the south. In summer, North African air sometimes pushes hot, low-pressure air northward into Spain.
Geography
Spain’s tall mountains, like the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada, block some weather systems and create pressure differences. Coastal areas near the Atlantic generally have lower pressure than inland or Mediterranean areas. Valleys and basins, like the Ebro Valley, can trap high or low pressure, affecting local weather.
Seasonal Cycles
In winter, Spain often has higher pressure over the center and lower pressure along the coast, bringing fog and calm weather inland. In summer, high pressure from the Azores dominates, especially in central and southern Spain, usually bringing hot, clear days. Low pressure sometimes appears in the north, bringing summer storms.
Climate Change
Climate change may make high-pressure periods longer and hotter, especially in summer, leading to more droughts. Low-pressure storms might become less frequent but more intense, with heavy rain and flooding. These trends could shift how pressure patterns affect Spain’s weather in the future.
Places in Spain
You can find your city in the lists below, by using our search, or on the Spain Pressure Map above. We're tracking barometric pressure across multiple locations in Spain to keep you informed.
Each city includes a pressure status showing whether it's currently high, normal or low, along with two volatility values: one for today and one for the full period, usually 14 days. These help you see how much the pressure is changing over time.
